Installing Armco Barriers at Skelton Grange, Leeds

Case study: Installing Armco Barriers at Skelton Grange, Leeds

Background

Skelton Grange in Leeds isn’t your average industrial site. It’s being transformed by Enfinium into an energy‑from‑waste facility, and will process up to 410,000 tonnes of waste a year.

In this setting, safety is paramount. The client needed a complete rethink of how protection was implemented across a complex, evolving facility.

CT Safety Barriers was selected not just for our ability to operate in technically challenging, multi-disciplinary environments, but because we ensure quality and compliance.

Challenges

Every project comes with its own set of hurdles, and Skelton Grange was no exception.

Alongside dealing with heavy vehicle movement and busy walkways, the client requested that daily operations continued during the installation.

The challenge was to carry out meaningful improvements without holding up the people and processes that kept Skelton Grange running.

Our Approach

Instead of a single solution, the outcome was a set of layered fixes, each addressing a different risk:

Internal and External Armco Safety Barriers
We installed Armco barriers in the areas that faced the greatest risk. Inside the facility, these barriers were set up along busy routes, near equipment, and in high-traffic corners where vehicle movement is constant.

Outside, we installed the safety barriers around the site perimeter, where they were specifically designed to absorb impact.

Custom Handrails at the Pits:
Each inspection pit on the industrial site got a set of handrails. Each one was carefully measured and built to match the exact layout of the area, making them ideal for the team’s daily use.

Walkway Gates:
CT Safety Barriers’ team helped put in secure gates at walkway intersections across the Leeds site. This system made it easier for staff and visitors to access the areas they needed, while stopping them from entering high-risk zones.

Pedestrian Railings Next to Vehicle Routes:
We put up robust pedestrian railings to create a clear divide near vehicle routes. Instead of simply fencing off sections, we carefully mapped out the routes people used, marking out walkways that felt intuitive rather than restrictive.
