RSJ Beams & Posts Guide

RSJs – or rolled steel joists – are steel construction components that are commonly used in a variety of projects. While they are often used to build sturdy structures, they can also be used as part of an Armco barrier system to cordon off walkways and protect workers from heavy machinery.

What is an RSJ?

RSJ, which stands for “rolled steel joist”, is simply the industry term for steel beams. The beam – sometimes called a universal beam – is created using hot or cold rolled steel. They have two flanges (the horizontal planes) connected by a vertical web, creating a cross-section resembling either the letter “I” or “H”.

  • I-Beam: These have a narrow web and wide flanges, offering high resistance to bending. This is the most common RSJ.
  • H-Beam: These types have equal sized flange and web widths, enhancing strength and load distribution. They can bring colliding vehicles to an immediate stop.

Their shapes distribute weight efficiently, reducing stress on structures. They are used widely in construction due to their strength, versatility, and durability.

Usually made from high-strength steel, RSJs are sometimes made from other materials such as aluminium.

RSJ beams vs RSJ posts: The difference

The main difference between these two products is that RSJ beams are installed horizontally, whereas RSJ posts are installed vertically.

Beams are generally designed to span distances and support them horizontally, whereas posts provide vertical support, often as part of an Armco safety barrier system.

Both are made from the same material (high-strength rolled steel) and have the same substantial load-bearing capacities and resistance to corrosion and wear.

The steel beams have much higher resistance to fire than wooden beams. Steel doesn’t melt until around 2500 degrees Fahrenheit. Wood burns at around 570 degrees Fahrenheit.

Often prefabricated to specific measurements, reducing on-site cutting and welding needs. Also, despite their strength, they’re relatively easy to handle and position using standard construction equipment. This facilitates easy installation, reducing time and costs.

What types of RSJs do you need?

Since Armco barriers require posts to keep them in place, RSJ posts are more commonly used for safety barriers than beams, maximising the safety of your barriers.

  • Standard RSJ Posts are ideal for quick installations in warehouses, factories and warehouses. They can be put into place with minimal disruption to operations.
  • Shorter RSJ posts and compact RSJ posts can be used for lower barrier systems like car parks and pedestrian walkways.
  • Medium-height and taller RSJs are better for areas needing more substantial impact resistance such as industrial zones.

  • Low-Level Posts: £48.00 + VAT

  • High-Level Posts: Prices available upon request, generally higher due to increased length and casting requirements.

Installing RSJ beams

There are two traditional ways of installing an Armco barrier with RSJ posts:

  • Cast In (or Dig In) posts – Fitted in a soft surface such as wet cement.
  • Bolt Down posts – Armco posts are bolted into an impenetrable surface like set concrete.

The Cast In process is highly recommended at CT Safety Barriers, as the hard cement will provide maximum support for your Armco barrier system. But we can do it both ways. Beyond this, ensure that you have:

1.      Accurate planning

Assess the areas in need of barrier protection, making meticulous measurements to determine the right size and measurement of RSJ beam.

2.      Professional installation

Installation incurs labour costs, which differ depending on who you hire. Don’t leave anything to chance when it comes to safety. Hire professionals to ensure that your RSJ beams are installed properly.

3.      Compliance

Ensure all installations meet local building codes and regulations, as defined by Gov.uk. For example, a structural engineer must be involved in any project that uses RSJ beams. You also need approval from your Building Control department. Also consider load-bearing requirements, fire safety, and Eurocode compliance.

4.      Subsequent maintenance

Provide regular inspections and maintenance to ensure longevity and safety. Check for signs of rust, corrosion, and structural damage, particularly in outdoor environments, as these are more likely to be exposed to moisture and chemicals. Luckily, RSJ maintenance is minimal.
